Choosing the Right Office Chair
The right office chair depends on three things: how long you sit each day, what kind of support your body needs, and what fits the room.
For extended daily use (more than four hours at a desk), prioritise ergonomic features over aesthetics. Look for adjustable lumbar support, seat depth adjustment and tilt tension control. Our ergonomic office chairs range covers models with proper all-day adjustability.
For warmer rooms or a lighter visual presence, mesh chairs are the better choice. The breathable back keeps you cooler during longer sessions and the overall silhouette is less dominant than a leather executive chair. Browse our mesh office chairs range.
For a more formal, professional appearance, executive leather chairs combine comfort with visual authority. Particularly popular for home offices where clients or colleagues see the room on video calls. See our executive leather office chairs range.
For practical everyday use without the premium price, operator and task chairs offer solid adjustability at accessible prices. Suited to study spaces, spare rooms and secondary workstations. Browse our operator and task chairs range.
For shared offices, heavy daily use or round-the-clock environments, 24-hour chairs are built with reinforced mechanisms and more robust components. See our 24-hour office chairs range.
For budget-conscious setups, our office chairs under £100 bring together practical, adjustable options at entry-level prices — suitable for home working, study and secondary workstations.
What to Look for in an Office Chair
After 20 years in the furniture industry, the features that genuinely matter — and the ones that don't — tend to be different from what marketing suggests.
Adjustable seat height is essential. Without it, the chair can't be properly fitted to your body and your desk. Every chair in our range has this as standard.
Lumbar support matters more than most features. Some chairs have a fixed lumbar curve built into the backrest, others have an adjustable lumbar pad. Adjustable lumbar is better if you have specific lower back concerns — the fixed curve may or may not sit in the right place for your height.
Seat depth adjustment (sometimes called "seat slide") allows you to change how much of your thigh the seat supports. Important if you're particularly tall or short, or if the chair will be used by more than one person.
Tilt tension control lets you adjust how easily the chair reclines. Matters for anyone who moves around during the day or wants to shift between upright and reclined positions.
Armrests — check whether they're fixed, height-adjustable, or fully adjustable. Fully adjustable (height, width, pivot) is best if you do significant keyboard work. Also confirm they fit under your desk.
Headrest — only useful if the chair has a reclining mechanism. A headrest on a chair that doesn't recline is essentially decoration.
Wheel type — most chairs come with hard plastic wheels suitable for carpet. If you're working on hard floors, either choose a chair with soft polyurethane wheels or add a chair mat to protect the surface.
Office Chair FAQs
What's the best office chair for long working hours?
For extended daily use, prioritise an ergonomic chair with adjustable lumbar support, seat depth adjustment and tilt tension control. The key is fit — a chair that suits your height, build and working style will always outperform a more expensive one that doesn't. If you're unsure which to choose, get in touch with your height and typical working hours and I'll suggest appropriate options.
What's the difference between an ergonomic chair and a task chair?
Task chairs are typically simpler and more compact, with basic adjustability suited to shorter working sessions or secondary workstations. Ergonomic chairs offer more comprehensive adjustment options — lumbar support, seat depth, tilt tension, adjustable armrests — designed for regular all-day desk use.
Do I need a chair mat with my office chair?
It depends on your floor type. On carpet, a chair mat with a studded underside prevents the chair shifting and protects the carpet from wheel wear. On hard floors, a smooth-backed mat protects the surface from scratches and makes the chair easier to move. Either way, chair mats meaningfully extend both the life of your floor and the ease of movement throughout the day.
Are your chairs suitable for home and commercial use?
Yes — our range covers both. Some chairs are specifically suited to one audience (for example, budget operator chairs work well in home offices but may not withstand heavy commercial use). Others are dual-audience (like ergonomic mesh chairs, which suit both environments equally). Each sub-category page and product listing indicates the intended use.
How do I know if a chair will fit under my desk?
Check the chair's overall height at its lowest seat setting, then compare to your desk height (typically 72–75cm underside). Also check the armrest height — fixed or non-adjustable armrests may hit the underside of some desks. If you're unsure, send me your desk dimensions before ordering.
What if I want a chair for under £100?
Our budget chairs range brings together office chairs at accessible prices while still offering practical adjustability for daily use. Ideal for home working, study spaces and secondary workstations where full ergonomic specification isn't essential.
Do your office chairs include free UK delivery?
Yes. Free UK mainland delivery is included on every chair in our range with no minimum order.
