What Weight Capacity Do I Need for an Office Desk?
Weight capacity is one of those desk specifications that gets listed on every product page but rarely explained. Most people glance at the number, assume it's fine, and move on. In most cases that's the right call — but if you're running a heavier setup, it's worth understanding what the figure actually means and how to check your desk will handle it comfortably.
What Does Desk Weight Capacity Mean?
The weight capacity figure on a desk specification refers to the maximum static load the worktop is designed to support — in other words, the combined weight of everything sitting on the surface. It doesn't account for dynamic loads like leaning heavily on the desk or impact, which place more stress on the frame than static weight alone.
Most rectangular office desks have a stated capacity of between 50kg and 100kg. For the majority of home office setups, this is more than sufficient.
What Does a Typical Home Office Setup Weigh?
To put the numbers in context, here's a rough guide to common desk items:
A standard 24–27 inch monitor weighs between 3–6kg. A desktop PC tower typically weighs 6–12kg. A laptop is usually 1.5–3kg. A monitor arm weighs 2–4kg. Peripherals, speakers, a desk lamp and everyday items combined rarely exceed 5–8kg.
A typical dual-monitor home office setup — two monitors, a laptop, a desktop PC, peripherals and everyday items — will usually fall in the 25–40kg range. A single-monitor laptop setup is likely to come in under 15kg.
For the vast majority of home office users, a desk with a 50kg capacity is sufficient. If you're running a heavier professional setup with large monitors, a desktop tower and additional equipment, look for desks rated at 80kg or above.
When Weight Capacity Matters More
Weight capacity becomes a more important consideration in a few specific situations.
If you're mounting monitors on a monitor arm bolted through the worktop, the load transfers differently than a freestanding monitor — check the desk specifications and the arm's installation requirements carefully.
If you're using the desk for equipment beyond standard office use — photography gear, audio equipment, multiple large screens — add up the weights before ordering.
For commercial environments where desks are heavily loaded throughout the day, prioritise desks with reinforced frames and higher stated capacities.
What to Check on the Product Page
Weight capacity is listed in the specifications section of each individual product page. If you're comparing two desks and capacity isn't immediately clear, get in touch and I can confirm the figure for any desk in the range.
All desks in the Essentials and Origin ranges include full specifications on their product pages, including worktop thickness and frame type, which both contribute to overall load performance.
