Bob's Story: Why an Independent Home Office Furniture Business?
For 19 years, Bob worked at a major UK office furniture retailer as a Product Marketing Manager and later as a Supplier Manager. Senior roles, real responsibility, and a front-row view of how the office furniture industry actually operates — from the manufacturer side, the retailer side, and the customer side.
In that role, the catalogue ran to over one million SKUs from more than 50 suppliers. Managing at that scale means you see everything that goes wrong: suppliers who miss delivery windows consistently, products that photograph well but fail within a year of daily use, ranges that look coordinated in a catalogue but don't match in person, and customer service routed through so many layers that nobody actually knows the product by the time a complaint lands.
When Bob set up his own business in 2024, he made a deliberate decision to go in the opposite direction. Rather than listing every product available from every supplier, the range was kept deliberately small — currently around 600 products — where every item, every supplier relationship and every delivery lead time can be managed personally. Change-of-mind returns are accepted within 14 days of delivery provided items are unopened and in their original packaging. Most chairs carry a minimum two-year mechanism warranty; selected models carry five years or more. Desks and storage are covered by manufacturer guarantees against defects in materials and construction. If something goes wrong within the warranty period, it gets dealt with directly — no supplier claims process, no being passed around.
