Underfloor heating used to be a luxury; in the UK it's now standard in kitchen extensions, garden rooms and a growing share of renovated home offices. Which creates a question I'm asked more and more: can you safely put a chair mat over it? The short answer is yes — but only if you choose the right mat, and the wrong one can cause genuine problems for both the mat and the floor. After 20 years in the furniture industry, this is one of the few chair mat decisions where checking the specification really matters. Here's what to look for.

Why underfloor heating changes the chair mat decision

A chair mat is designed to sit flat against the floor — and that's exactly the issue. Underfloor heating works by radiating heat up through the floor surface into the room. Lay an insulating layer on top and three things can happen.

First, the mat itself can suffer. Trapped heat softens some plastics, and an unrated mat can warp, ripple or curl at the edges — which not only looks tired but creates a trip hazard and an uneven rolling surface.

Second, the floor can suffer. Heat that can't escape builds up beneath the mat, and sustained higher temperatures are exactly what flooring manufacturers warn against — engineered wood can move and gap, vinyl and LVT can discolour or soften at the adhesive layer, laminate can lift at the joins.

Third, your heating works harder. An insulating mat blocks a patch of your heated floor, so the system runs longer to reach the same room temperature — a small effect for one mat, but worth knowing.

Which chair mats are safe over underfloor heating

The answer isn't a material so much as a rating. Some chair mats are specifically tested and rated as compatible with underfloor heating — the manufacturer has confirmed the mat tolerates the surface temperatures UFH produces and allows sufficient heat transfer. In practice, UFH-rated mats in our range tend to be polycarbonate or APET rather than budget PVC — rigid materials that hold their shape under warmth — but the rating on the product page is what to trust, not the material name alone.

If a mat's listing says nothing about underfloor heating, assume it isn't rated and ask before buying. This is one of those specifications that's either stated or absent for a reason.

Does your floor type change anything?

Somewhat. Tile over UFH is the most forgiving combination — tile handles heat comfortably and the main consideration is simply the mat's own rating. Vinyl, LVT and laminate are more sensitive: these floors usually carry a maximum surface temperature from their own manufacturer (often around 27°C), so heat building under a mat matters more. Engineered wood sits in between — it's designed for UFH but relies on even temperature, which is precisely what an insulating layer disrupts. Carpet over UFH exists too, and the same logic applies to studded carpet mats — check the rating, not just the backing type.

None of this should put you off. It just means the checklist has one extra line: your floor's temperature limit, and a mat rated for use over UFH.

A note on anti-fatigue mats

If you use a standing desk over underfloor heating, the same thinking applies to anti-fatigue mats — arguably more so, since cushioned foam is a better insulator than a thin polycarbonate sheet. Check for UFH compatibility before ordering, and slide the mat aside when you're not standing on it rather than leaving it in place around the clock.
