Sit-Stand Desk Buyer's Guide UK — Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy

A sit-stand desk is one of the most impactful changes you can make to a home office or professional workspace. The ability to alternate between sitting and standing through the working day reduces fatigue, supports better posture and makes long desk sessions noticeably more manageable. But with a range of options at different price points, it's worth understanding what you're buying before you commit. This guide covers everything you need to know.

How Does a Sit-Stand Desk Work?

A sit-stand desk — also called a height adjustable desk or standing desk — has a frame that raises and lowers the worktop to different heights. Electric models use a motorised mechanism controlled by a handset or panel, adjusting the height at the press of a button in a matter of seconds. Manual models use a hand crank.

For regular daily use, electric is the more practical choice. Manual adjustment is slower and less convenient, which means most people stop using it. If you're investing in a sit-stand desk to genuinely change how you work, an electric model removes the friction that gets in the way of that habit.

What Height Range Do I Need?

The height range of the desk needs to accommodate both your sitting and standing positions comfortably. For most adults, a desk that adjusts from around 650mm to 1250mm will cover both positions without compromise. Check the minimum and maximum height specifications on any desk you're considering and compare them against your own seated and standing desk height requirements.

A general rule: when sitting, your elbows should be at roughly 90 degrees with your forearms resting comfortably on the worktop. When standing, the same principle applies — the worktop should come to roughly elbow height.

Electric vs Manual — Which Should You Choose?

Electric desks adjust at the press of a button, typically in under 30 seconds. The mechanism is quiet, smooth and requires no effort. This makes switching positions throughout the day genuinely easy — which is the whole point.

Manual desks use a hand crank and take considerably longer to adjust. In practice, most people with manual sit-stand desks stop adjusting them and leave them at one height. For occasional height changes they're fine; for daily sit-stand use, electric is strongly recommended.

All height adjustable desks in our range at Bob's Home Office Furniture are electric.

What Size Worktop Do I Need?

Sit-stand desks are available in a range of widths, typically from 1200mm to 1800mm. The right size depends on your room dimensions and what you need to fit on the surface.

For a single monitor setup, 1200mm is sufficient. For dual monitors or a more demanding setup with peripherals and a desktop PC, 1400–1600mm gives you comfortable working room without the desk dominating the space. For a dedicated professional workspace, 1800mm provides maximum surface area.

Check your room dimensions carefully before ordering — a sit-stand desk needs slightly more clearance than a fixed desk to account for the frame mechanism and the space required when standing.

What Should I Look for in the Frame?

Frame stability is the most important specification after height range. A wobbly frame at standing height makes a sit-stand desk frustrating to use — particularly if you're typing or using a mouse at standing height.

Look for desks with reinforced crossbars or twin upright leg designs, which significantly reduce lateral movement at height. The Essentials Lite range offers solid frame stability at an accessible price point, while the Origin sit-stand range steps up frame rigidity and worktop quality for more demanding use.

Do I Need an Anti-Fatigue Mat?

Not essential, but strongly recommended if you're standing on a hard floor for more than 20–30 minutes at a time. An anti-fatigue mat reduces the pressure on your feet, legs and lower back during standing periods and makes the sit-stand habit considerably easier to maintain long term. Our anti-fatigue mats are designed specifically for use with sit-stand desks.

How Much Should I Spend?

Entry-level electric sit-stand desks in the UK start from around £299 for a compact, well-built option suitable for home office use. Mid-range desks in the £370–£500 range offer larger worktops, more robust frames and better stability at standing height. Above £500 you're typically looking at professional-grade frames with higher weight capacities and more advanced handset controls.

For most home office users, the £299–£400 range offers the best balance of quality, stability and value.
